18 Month Wedding Planning Checklist

15-18 Months Before:

· Decide on the area you would like to have your wedding and choose a wedding date

· Decide on what you want your wedding theme to be

· Create a wedding budget with your fiance and family (knowing that you will probably go over budget when all is said and done)

· Start figuring out your guest list from both sides of the family

· Begin researching ceremony and reception venues in the area

· Start researching and scheduling tours at your wedding venue(s)

· Begin looking into photographers, videographers, florists, and caterers in the area

12-15 Months Before:

· Book your reception and ceremony wedding venues

· Make sure to book your key vendor like wedding photographer, videographer, or caterer

· Select the people that you want to be in your wedding party

· Finish creating your guest list

· Order "Save the Date" cards

10-12 Months Before:

· Start researching and shopping for your wedding dress

· Start creating your wedding registry (Amazon, Etsy, or Target)

· Buy your wedding attire

· Have your partner buy their wedding attire

· Book your florist and decide on how you want your bouquet, your bridesmaid’s bouquet, and your groomsmen’s boutonnieres

· Book your DJ or your band

· Send out your save the date cards

8-10 Months Before:

· Start looking at where you and your fiancé want to have your honeymoon

· Book your bakery for your wedding cake and for your dessert menu

· Book your officiant

· Order tables and chair rentals if your venue does not already provide them

· Start researching hair and makeup ideas

6-8 Months Before:

· Have everyone in your wedding party get everything they need for their wedding attire

· Book the location that you will be staying at for your honeymoon and book your plane tickets if needed

4-6 Months Before:

· Purchase your wedding favors

· Buy any extra items or decor for your wedding ceremony

· Start planning your bridal shower or bachelorette party if you want to have one

· Book any necessary transportation for your wedding day

2-4 Months Before:

· Send out your wedding invitations and make sure to include RSVP instructions and deadlines

· Purchase gifts for the wedding party and for both of the parents

· Finalize the wedding cake and dessert menu with the quantity needed

· Create your seating chart along with assigning table numbers

· Finish the program for the ceremony

· Create a song playlist for your reception

1-2 Months Before:

Second Wedding, Second Chance

Take One

I went all out for my first wedding with a large Polish-Catholic wedding which was held in my childhood church where I attended elementary school. The reception was held at a country club in an upscale neighborhood. My parents planned and paid for a very traditional affair. As a chronic "people pleaser," I tried to please everyone with my wedding. Although I had doubts on whether or not I wanted to go through with it, there was no way I had the guts to back out of it. The wedding was when I was 22 years old. Although I was somewhat happy with the way all the details turned out, it was really more my parents' affair. We had 250 guests, a live band and lots of food and dancing.

I chose a wedding dress that I thought I should wear rather than what actually suited my body type. I never had a trial hair appointment either. I remember sitting in the chair the morning of my wedding watching my hairdresser just sort of winging it without really have a solid plan in place. He took a stick that looked like deodorant and began rubbing this pomade on each strand of my naturally curly hair, ringlet hair. I pondered whether not liking my hair was a valid reason to call the whole event off.

Back in the day, most brides didn't have their makeup professionally done either.

I remember looking at my drug store brand eyeshadow palette thinking how I could transform myself into the best version of myself. I stared into the mirror at my purple eyelids, my updo that looked like a bunch of ramen noodles in a high ponytail atop my head topped off with a lace and sequins tiara. I remember thinking, this is supposed to be the one day in your entire life where you are supposed to feel the most beautiful and I felt ugly. I actually thought about not going through with it because I felt that I didn't look pretty enough to be a bride.

I had such great role models for marriage in my parents that I thought this would be a snap. Unfortunately, I didn't choose wisely. I wanted so badly to have that amazing love story, but I didn't get my happily ever after.

Take Two

At the age of 35, I didn't really think I would be a bride again. I was engaged to my high school sweetheart this time around. I think I wanted to do everything opposite of how my first wedding was. There were even times when I would push him away to see if he would break, to see if he would become what I had always known men to be. He never did.

Second time around my outlook is different. Maybe a little jaded, but definitely more down to earth.

I was feeling guilty about having a wedding again. I remember walking into bridal shops and feeling out of place around the 20 something brides who were all blushing and giddy in their search for the perfect dress. I remember waves of cynicism coming over me looking at these innocent girls saying to myself 'hope it lasts." It wasn't that I was worried about my next marriage or scorned from the first. It was more of a feeling of don't be too surprised if you don't get your happily ever after on the first go around. After all, isn't the divorce rate in this country 52%? Odds are, half the girls in that bridal salon will be doing this again at some point in their life, right?

Still a people pleaser and wanting to make everyone around me happy (some things never change), but our wedding planning was much more relaxed and low-key this time. We paid for it ourselves with very little outside help, which really helped avoid all the standard wedding stresses, too!

For my second wedding, things were very different. I was older with a better sense of what I wanted my wedding to be like. We planned it together, in six months, which I felt was all the time we needed. Being more in tune with myself and my style made planning easier and more rewarding. We picked the location and had 50 guests. Our photographer took more photojournalistic style instead of the posed portraits taken at my first wedding.

Initially, I felt uneasy about planning another wedding. Hadn't I done the celebratory thing already? Did I deserve a party again? My family and friends had already given me gifts. Should I even be registering for a new teapot? The one I already have works just fine. No one said anything, of course, but I still felt funny. I talked to someone who said every wedding is a reason for celebration.

A lot of second time brides still feel ashamed and carry a sense of failure over getting divorced. Gone are the days when a second-time bride had to sport a conservative suit or a low-key visit to the courthouse. While old-school etiquette says second timers should skip all the frills of a wedding, I say this is your first time as a bride to him, Mr. #2. Just because your first marriage didn't make it doesn't mean there isn't reason to celebrate.

You've found love again and couldn't be happier. So, what's with the nagging second-time bride guilt? Here are some tips on how to get over the guilt of first-time failure and move onto second-time bliss.

Prepare - Talk to a minister or counselor. Take a marriage preparation class.
Communicate - Talk to close friends and family members. Saying something along the lines of "I have to confess I feel funny about asking you to do this for a second time, but I appreciate your support."
Think positively. Don't spend time worrying that guests are calculating whether this marriage will last (and if they're placing bets on it).
Be graceful. Never apologize to anyone for what you are doing.
Having more life experiences under your belt gives you a better sense of who you are. Remember, every bride wants to look and feel beautiful no matter what number marriage it is.

Yes ladies, every bride is a type. Don't take offense to this - it simply makes the approach from your bridal stylist, planner, venue, tent person, florist, and caterer a bit easier. Once we establish this, we can determine the correct amount of support and constructive guidance you will need. And let me be clear, there is no 'right or wrong' type. All brides are equally filled with magic, creativity and charm, and it is an honor to be able to help make your vision come to life.

1. The perfectionist

Step aside wedding planner! You have drawn up spreadsheet after spreadsheet to ensure your big day goes smoothly. You’ve downloaded all the wedding planning apps, carry your wedding planning binder with you 24/7 and have all of you vendor contacts on speed dial! There is not one intricate detail of your wedding that has been have left untouched. From the exact font on the place cards to the pre-dinner music that will be played by your string quartet, every aspect of your day has been carefully thought out and coordinated. We love the perfectionist but remember not to get too caught up in the details and enjoy your wedding!

2. The worrier

Ever the pessimist. The glass is always half empty in your world. In regard to your wedding day, you have thought about every possible scenario and have a multitude of plan Bs up your gauntlet sleeve. Every bride experiences the pre-wedding day jitters hoping that everything goes off without a hitch. The worrier bride, however, spends countless hours thinking about the “what ifs,” and yours takes the cake (no pun intended). You have planned and prepared for every possible situation from wardrobe malfunctions to the DJ forgetting to show up. You’ve got it all covered, girl! So, when the big day arrives be sure to take a dose of “Relax Remedy” and enjoy your special day!

3. The party queen

Would you have it any other way? After all, you wedding is just one big celebration and party, isn’t it? This is the one moment you have been waiting for to let your hair down, bustle that train up and drop it low on the dance floor like no one’s watching! Your big day is full of celebratory antics! Your wedding planning style will embrace “Go big or go home.” It will encompass lots of champagne and your goal is to make sure that everyone has a blast and will be comparing your party to any other wedding that dares to rival yours!

4. The people-pleaser

If you could find a job making people happy for a living, you would take it. Wedding planning by itself means inviting a lot of unsolicited opinions into your life. From picking out your dress to which relative gets to sit next to Crazy Uncle Eddie...everyone has an opinion. When you add in a compulsive need to keep everyone happy it can send you into a downward spiral....and fast!

Keeping everyone happy is what you do best but on your wedding, remember it's about you and your partner...and no one else.

5. The serial spender

You are spending cash left, right and center. You want "all the things!" You are completely oblivious to the stack of receipts piling up on your kitchen counter. Don't beat yourself up because you're hardly the first bride to ever do so. According to a study by the Knot, 56% of couples spent more than they planned by an average of $7,900. The truth is: If you don't have a budget in place, you will overspend!

6. The emotional wreck

Check yourself before your wreck yourself. Every time you think of your wedding you start to tear up. For better or worse (pun intended) you cry at everything. Whether you teared up when you said yes to your dress or the waterworks began when your florist backed out at the last minute, you can't help but blubber at any given moment. Keeping Kleenex in business is your M.O. and when you are wedding planning, you don't leave home without the tissues! When the big day arrives, take a deep breath and try to enjoy the moment. 7. The romantic bride

Let's face it, you've been dreaming about your wedding day since you were ten years old. Inspired by years of weddings and endless princess movies, you are wanting your day to be filled with love, devotion and happiness. With Cinderella as your idol, you dream of being the belle of the ball for just one day. From the flowers to the venue to the vows and to the dress, this day matters more to you than other. You are on a mission to create your own fairytale and happy every after.

We've all heard the stories of the Bridezilla and we think it will never happen to us. As soon as the ring is popped on your finger, the stress-fest known as wedding planning begins. You are frequently fighting with friends and family; your bridal party is MIA and all of your vendors let your phone calls go to voicemail. Alterations Are Everything

You've just dropped a pretty penny on your dream dress and now you're wondering if you'll need alterations. The short answer is...YES! Unless she is custom-made, your wedding dress is based on a generic model so in order for it to fit your unique body properly, you will need to have it altered.

As you break out the measuring tape, here are some wedding dress alteration tips you should know.

1. What should I bring to my dress fitting?

Always have your wedding shoes. The height of your shoes is extremely important in determining the hem length. That being said, it's super important that you don't wear 5-inch Jimmy Choo's to your fitting and then later decide to walk down the aisle in a pair of Vans! You will be tripping over your gown all the way down to the alter. If you still haven't decided which shoes to wear on the big day, you can bring a pair with a similar heel height to your fitting so that your seamstress can measure the length you'll need to have your gown hemmed.

2. How long does a dress-fitting appointment last?

To take the stress out, it's a good idea to schedule your first fitting to take place roughly three to four months before the wedding day. The first fitting usually takes about an hour, with subsequent appointments lasting around 30 minutes. The second fitting should be about a month before your wedding and your final fitting at the two-week mark. You may need additional fittings if you're adding extensive customizations, such as long sleeves or a train. At the first fitting, your seamstress will go over every aspect of the dress from head to toe to see what needs to be altered.

3. How many bridal fittings will I need?

Your seamstress will be able to advise you on how many fittings you will need, or at least provide you with an estimate. The number of fittings you'll need depends on the number of alterations required and how much your body changes during that time. Your dress was ordered according to the largest measurement between your waist, bust and hips so it will probably not fit properly at your first appointment. On average, brides will usually need around three fittings before the dress is ready to be worn on the big day.

4. Why are bridal alterations so expensive?

One of the reasons alterations are so expensive is because of the level and skill of the seamstress. In addition, most seamstresses work by the hour. They may take a look at your dress and estimate a price based on 10 hours of work, but once they begin working on your dress it may take closer to 20 hours of work which doubles the original estimate. Fabric type is a common factor that impacts your wedding dress alteration cost. As a general rule, the more delicate fabrics tend to require more attention and time which means they will cost extra compared to other fabrics. Depending on what needs to be done, alterations can range anywhere from $50 to $1000. Be sure not to skimp on the cost of your alterations.

5. Can I lose weight after my first bridal fitting?

Planning on losing a significant amount of weight? No problem! You can still have your dream dress in time for your wedding even if you change dress sizes between purchasing your dress and taking that walk down the aisle. You may be thinking: why not order the dress in a smaller size? Weight loss in an unpredictable process. While you can always take a dress in, you can't always let it out. Nothing would be worse than being two months out from your wedding and realize you can't fit into your dress. It's always best to find a dress that you feel comfortable in right now. If you lose the weight, then that's a bonus. If you feel beautiful and confident standing int the dress right now, then you know it's the one!

6. How soon before my wedding do I start alterations?

You've found the dress, put it on order, and after months of waiting you learn that it has finally arrived. Yay! Most brides are eager to set up the alterations process. While it does take a few appointments to get your dress to fit just right, you don't want to schedule your first fitting too soon as your dress may not fit the way you want it to on your big day. If you wait too long, however, you may have to compromise on some of your alterations. We usually recommend allowing 3-4 months before your wedding to start alterations.

7. Should I wear a bra to my fitting?

Bringing the right pair of undergarments is an absolute must!

Most dresses have cups already sewn into them, so many brides do not wear a bra with their dress. If you've already purchased shapewear that you plan on wearing on the big day, make sure to bring it with you. Wearing them at your fitting will give you the most accurate feel as to how the dress will feel on your wedding day.

8. How can I save money on wedding dress alterations?

A dress that fits most closely to your actual size and requires the least number of alterations will save you money. Most brides, however, will at least need a hem. Some brides will measure into one size in the waist and another in the hips. This is completely normal. If you are measuring in between sizes, it's always better to order larger. Dresses can be taken in but remember that not all dresses can be let out. If...there's one piece of advice to remember...don't skimp on the alterations!
